Circular Economy in a High-Tech World

The proliferation of electronics, batteries, and solar panels in recent decades has resulted a substantial generation “high-tech” end-of-life products. Currently, these products follow largely linear model, i.e., extract → make use dispose, but significant effort is underway to transition more circular economy which materials are kept the out landfills, incinerators, environment. However, many technical economic challenges can impede, constrain, preclude for high-tech US National Institute Standards Technology recently convened expert stakeholders virtual workshop identify key needs foster panels, batteries. Here, we discuss several needs, provide specific data, standards, tools, proposed research development, educational address them. Furthermore, argue that cannot be achieved by individual efforts alone, rather necessitates collaboration across disciplines, industry sectors, public private stakeholders, geographical regions.
